The Journal was published by the Trademarks, Patents and Designs Registry in Nigeria on December 31, 2013. TM Watch No. 18 highlights some of the marks advertised in Classes 7, 8 and 12. Specifically, “Class 7: In respect of Machines and machine tools, motors and engines (except for land vehicles etc.)”, “Class 8: In respect of Hand tools and implements (hand operated cutlery, side arms, razors, forks and spoons” and “Class 12: In respect of Vehicle apparatus for locomotion by land, air or water.”

Panasonic Corporation Applies to Register “Panasonic ideas for life” in Class 7 in Nigeria

PANASONIC IDEAS FOR LIFEPanasonic Corporation (Panasonic) has lodged an application for the registration of “Panasonic ideas for life” at the Trademarks, Patents, and Designs Registry in Abuja.  The mark consists of the words “ideas for life” underneath the word “Panasonic”.  The application was filed on March 9, 2012 and covers Machines and machine tools, motors and engines (except for land vehicles etc.)

Panasonic has also registered the mark in Class 7 in several countries including Algeria, Australia, Canada, Egypt, Estonia, Israel, New Zealand, Oman, Singapore, Switzerland and the United States.

The status of the mark in Nigeria as of December 31, 2013, was accepted and approved for publication.

KIA Motors Corporation Applies to Register “KIA A Different Beat Vibrant Distinctive Reliable” in Class 12 in Nigeria

KIA A Different Beat Vibrant Distinctive ReliableSouth Korean automaker, KIA Motors Corporation (KIA), has filed an application for the registration of “KIA A Different Beat Vibrant Distinctive Reliable” at the Trademarks, Patents and Designs Registry in Abuja.  The application was lodged on December 28, 2012.  It covers vehicle apparatus for locomotion by land, air or water in Class 12.

KIA has also registered the mark in Class 12 in several countries including Australia, Canada, Israel, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore and the United States.

The status of the mark in Nigeria as of December 31, 2013, was accepted and approved for publication.

The Gillette Co. Applies to Register “Venus Snap”, “Flexball”, “Proglide” and “Gillette Body” in Class 8 in Nigeria

FLEXBALLThe Gillette Co. (Gillette), has lodged separate applications for the registration of the terms “Venus Snap”, “Flexball”, “Proglide”, and “Gillette Body”, at the Trademarks, Patents, and Designs Registry in Abuja.  The applications for “Flexball” and “Proglide” were filed on April 16, 2013. The application for “Venus Snap” was filed on “January 10, 2013 while the application for “Gillette Body” was filed on June 7, 2013.  All applications cover hand tools in Class 8.

WIPO’s Global Brand Database, shows that Gillette., has also registered some of the marks in Class 8 in Australia, Canada, Israel, New Zealand, Singapore and Switzerland and the United States.

The status of all the applications in Nigeria as of December 31, 2013, was accepted and approved for publication.

Honda Motor Co. Ltd. Applies to Register the Non-Verbal Elements in the Logo used for Acura Cars in Class 12 in Nigeria

A-ACURAHonda Motor Co. Ltd. has lodged an application for the registration of the non-verbal elements in the logo used for its Acura cars.  The mark consists of a vertical “A” in a circle.  The application was filed on October 24, 2012 at the Trademarks, Patents, and Designs Registry in Nigeria and covers vehicle apparatus for locomotion by land, air or water in Class 12.

The company has also registered the mark in Class 12 in Canada, Israel and the Philippines.  The status of the mark in Nigeria as of December 31, 2013, was accepted and advertised for publication.

Starbucks Corporation, d/b/a Starbucks Coffee Company Applies to Register “Verismo” in Class 7 in Nigeria

VERISMOStarbucks Corporation, d/b/a Starbucks Coffee Company has filed an application to register “Verismo” at the Trademarks, Patents and Designs Registry in Abuja.  The application for the registration was filed on March 7, 2012.  Machines and machine tools, motors and engines (except for land vehicles etc.) in Class 7.

Starbucks has also registered the mark in Class 7 in several countries including Egypt, Oman, Singapore and the Philippines.  The status of the mark in Nigeria as of December 31, 2013, was accepted and advertised for publication.

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company Applies to Register “Goodyear” in Class 7 in Nigeria

GoodyearThe Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (Goodyear) has lodged an application for the registration of “Goodyear” at the Trademarks, Patents, and Designs Registry in Abuja.  The application was filed on December 17, 2012 and covers Machines and machine tools, motors and engines (except for land vehicles etc.) in Class 7.

Goodyear has registered “Goodyear” in Class 7 in Algeria, Cambodia, Canada, Estonia and New Zealand.  The status of the mark in Nigeria as of December 31, 2013, was accepted and approved for publication.
