In registering trademarks in Nigeria, you may apply for the mark to be registered under one or more of the 45 classes. Each class represents a distinct class of goods or services and for each application, you must pay a separate registration fee.
If you are registering a trademark for education, training and entertainment services in Nigeria, choosing Class 41 is your best bet.
Class 41 includes entertainment services, film production (not including advertising of films), education information, language interpreter services, conducting fitness classes, boarding and nursery schools, cinema presentations, movie theater presentations, arranging of beauty contests, conducting seminars, conferences and workshops, night clubs etc.
You would NOT use Class 41 if you were registering:
- Pharmaceuticals (Class 5)
- Coffee, Rice or Tea (Class 30)
- Leather and Imitations of Leather (Class 18)
- Non-Alcoholic Beverages (Class 32)
Current examples of trademarks filed in Class 41 include: Lantern Films & Device, Teachers without Borders, Africa’s Got Talent, Top Chef Nigeria/Africa, Vogue, Who Wants to be a Movie Star, Miss Entrepreneur Africa, Most Beautiful Girl in Eko, Miss Polo Beauty Pagent, Organization for Illicit Drug Abuse Education etc.
