Standards Organisation of Nigeria

 The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) is the sole statutory body that is vested with the responsibility of standardising and regulating the quality of all products in Nigeria. Established by Act No. 56 of 1971 and with three amendments in 1976, 1984 and 1990, the body corporate, has the sole responsibility for National Policy on Standards, Standards Specification and Quality Control.

The National Film and Video Censors Board

 

Established by Act No. 85 of 1993, the National Film and Video Censors Board is the official regulatory agency for the film and video industry in Nigeria. The Board censors and rates films and video works produced in Nigeria, and foreign films and video works imported for the Nigerian market. The Board is also responsible for licensing and registration of all film and video outlets operating within Nigeria.

Trademark and Patent Tribunal

The Registrar of Trademarks, Patent and Designs Registry sits as a Tribunal to adjudicate over disputes and applications arising from the operation of the Trademarks, Patents and Designs Act. The Registrar has the power to adjudicate over contentious and non-contentious applications including applications arising from Trademark Opposition proceedings. In addition to the powers given to the Registrar, applicants can apply to the Federal High Court to exercise the powers of the Trademarks and Patent Tribunal.

Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON)

COSON is a non-profit making organization of all owners of copyright or neighboring rights in musical works and sound recordings. In the year 2000, existing collective management structures in Nigeria came together as one body in order to create a stronger force in the fight against copyright infringement and other forms of piracy in Nigeria, this coalition however took effect between 2009 and 2010.
