The Managing Director of Tonad Publishers Limited, Mr.Tony Iwena has accused the EPP Books Services and other publishers of alleged copyright infringement of his intellectual property.
According to the plaintiff, the defendants pirated on its essential textbook series which was produced by the plaintiff.
The plaintiff went into partnership with the Managing Director of EPP Books Services, Chigozie Aguguo, in 2012 to jointly produce books made by Tonad but unfortunately EPP Books Services produced and printed the books in India without the plaintiff consent and sold them in Nigeria without remittance from 2012 till date.
The plaintiff alleges that the defendant’s infringement has caused a lot of damages leading to bankruptcy of the company, which is on the verge of folding up, staff strength has reduced from 120 to 20 due to lack of sufficient fund to pay salaries.
The plaintiff also alleges that N360m has been lost as a result of the defendant’s piracy of the books.
The lawyer for Tonad Publishers Limited, Blessing Ahmed of Blue Diamond Law Firm, said the illegal importation had caused the company huge financial damage, adding that a suit would be instituted to collect all the profit that had been made.
“We have petitioned the Assistant Inspector-General of Police and have swung into action regarding the investigation and we have gone to obtain a warrant of arrest from a court and also an order to probe into the account of the Managing Director of EPP Books. We want justice to take its course. We want the police to investigate thoroughly and prosecute. We also want to institute a civil suit to collect the profits he has made,” she said.
Aguguo was arrested on October 10, 2018, and released on bail on October 11, 2018 however Aguguo has refuted the allegations.
The Public Relations Officer, Zone 2 police headquarters, Dolapo Badmus, said discreet investigation was ongoing.
