On Sunday, the Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Professor Mojisola Adeyeye disclosed that the agency has confiscated not less than 35 containers of tramadol at different ports in Nigeria.
Professor Adeyeye stated that the agency is working with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on the seizure of substances such as tramadol. Nine of the 35 containers that were seized by NCS have been handed over to NAFDAC.
The Director General added that each time NCS seizes containers such as this, they invite NAFDAC to see and destroy the seized containers.
She however called on NCS to release the remaining containers to the Agency in order to ensure that the contents of those containers are properly destroyed through one of NAFDAC’s destruction exercises.
Professor Adeyeye further stated that tramadol was a restricted drug but had been abused by Nigerian youths who use it without prescription. Improper usage of this drug reportedly has damaging effects to the brains of children.
She added that tramadol should be given only by prescription as done in advanced countries in order to combat this menace of drug abuse.
