Nigeria: Check Trademark Status and Retrieve Documents

The Intellectual Property Office in Nigeria (Trademarks, Patents and Designs Registry) has an online portal that allows for filing of trademarks, patents and design applications. The portal is user-friendly simplifying the process of filing trademarks, patents and design applications in the country. It enables registered users to pay the official fees through the Internet and upon completion, allows them check the status of their applications as well as retrieve copies of forms issued by the registry .

Check Status of Trademark Applications

Registered users can use the Intellectual Property Office in Nigeria’s online portal to check the status information of their trademarks, patents and designs applications. Please note that users can only check the status of trademark application filed online. Marks filed manually at the registry are not currently available for online status checks.

Registered users can scroll down the left menu and click on the tab marked ‘Application Status’. They can then select the type of application they would like to review i.e. trademarks, patents or designs.

If trademarks is selected, the user will need to have either the Transaction ID or the Registration/TP number. Both the Transaction ID and the Registration/TP number are located on the Acknowledgement Form which is generated immediately after filing an application. The transaction ID can also be retrieved from the email sent to the user after payment of the application fee.

With the Transaction ID or the TP Number, users can search to obtain the trademark status as the registry provides a box containing the status information message. The message updates users on which office is currently reviewing the trademark application.

Retrieve Documents for Pending and Registered Trademark Applications

Registered users can also use the portal to view and download documents for pending and registered trademarks. For example, through the online portal, you can retrieve copies of Acknowledgement, Acceptance and Refusal Forms for trademark applications.

  1. The Platform is a good one but how I wish it is very effective. If you file a Trademark without paying someone to follow up your work, it will remain there till God knows when. I filed a Trademark since two months ago but it has not yet been processed.
