New Tariffs in Nigeria: A Look at the New Fees for Product Registration with the NAFDAC

January 21, 2015 – Companies interested in doing business in Nigeria, particularly in the food and drug sector would have noticed that at the beginning of this year, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), began implementing its scheduled increase in the fees for registering food and drug products in the country.

NLIPW takes a closer look at the increased fees as it affects bulk pesticides, animal feed, agrochemicals, pet food, premixes, feed additives and feed concentrates in comparison with the old fees, which were last reviewed in 2004.

1. Guidelines for Registration of Imported Animal Feed, Pet Food and Premix. (NAFDAC/VMAP/003/13

These guidelines are for companies engaged in the importation of Animal Feed, Premixes and Pet Food.

Comments on Change in fees: 

Changes under these guidelines were very significant. The registration fees increased from ₦150,000 + 5% VAT to ₦803,500.  The fees for obtaining permit to import samples increased from ₦10,500 + 5% VAT to ₦21,000 + 5% VAT. Also the new guidelines specifically provide fees for processing and inspection.

2. Guidelines for Obtaining Permit to Import Bulk Pesticides Agrochemicals and Fertilizers (NAFDAC/VMAP/001/14

These guidelines are for manufacturers and importers of Pesticides, Agrochemicals and Fertilizers in Nigeria.

There were a number of significant changes under these guidelines. The total fees for obtaining a new import permit increased from ₦64,000 to ₦102,000.  The renewal fees also increased from ₦37,750 to ₦62,000.

3. Guidelines for Registration of Locally Manufactured Animal Feed, Pet Food, and Premixes (NAFDAC/VMAP/004/13)

These guidelines are for companies that want to engage in local manufacture of Animal feeds, Premixes and Pet food.

There were no significant changes under these guidelines. The only change was with regard to the VAT on the registration fees.

These guidelines are for companies that want to engage in the importation of Feed Supplement, Feed Concentrates, Feed Additives, Premixes and Fish Meal.
