Reggae star, Nardo Ranks has filed a lawsuit in the New York Southern District Court against Jamaican dancehall artist HoodCelebrityy over allegedly stolen lyrics.
Nardo Ranks alleges that HoodCelebrityy whose real name is Tina Pinnock pirated and extracted certain lyrics from the defendant’s 1993 hit song “Them A Bleach” and inserted them into her “Run Di Road” without permission or authorization.
Nardo Ranks rose to fame in the late ’80s and early ’90s and was most known for his songs Dem A Bleach, Burrup, and Rykers Island.
The plaintiff alleges that the infringement has caused lots of damages, unfair competition, and confusion.
According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff names Pinnock and KSR Group, the record label that released the song on March 20, as defendants.
The plaintiffs’ attorney, Taso Pardalis reportedly said that “we acknowledge that imitation is the highest form of flattery but HoodCelebrityy imitated Nardo and calls it her own — that is breaking the law”.
Nardo Ranks is seeking payment of at least $500,000 in damages.
The case is pending.
