The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down an alleged illegal maize flour production outfit in Potiskum town of Yobe.
The Assistant Director in charge of the North-East Zonal office, Mr. Nasiru Mato reportedly said that the maize milling and packaging outfit was operating without adherence to set quality standards and good manufacturing practice which violates NAFDAC Act Cap No. 1 Law of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
According to Mato, the agency discovered certain violations including product misrepresentation, re-packaging, and misbranding as NAFATY Corn Flour, a non – existing brand, and Dangote Semolina, an existing brand.
“The products were displayed for sale to the unsuspecting consumers. More significantly too, there is no evidence of fortification with Vitamin A micronutrient. Repackaging of product is quite deceptive when measured against any yardstick”, Mato reportedly said.
Mato reportedly said that during the raid, suspected unwholesome products, branded packaging materials were seized for laboratory investigations.
Mato reportedly said that the agency would continue to do all within its limit to fight and ensure that only wholesome regulated products are made available to Nigerians.
Mato reportedly urged consumers to be very vigilant of what they buy in the market.
