The Acting Director-General for the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Mrs. Yetunde Oni, has issued a statement confirming the agency’s submission of a bill to the National Assembly. NAFDAC is seeking life jail term for drugs counterfeiters as a means to deter unrelenting offenders.

The Mrs. Oni made this known while speaking in Lagos last week.

It will be recalled that five persons were arrested for alleged illegal production, distribution and counterfeiting of Codeine Cough Syrup, Archilin, Peak brand of powdered milk, amongst others. Those arrested include: Mrs. Chika Nwaemeka Nwoye, Mr. Ebuka Ojeani Nelson, Mr. Udoka Offor, Mr. Emeka Mbonu and Mr. Christopher Nnabuihe. They have been duly arrested and charged to court. The case is currently pending.

It is pertinent to note that the bill as submitted by the agency’s Director for Investigation and Enforcement, Mr. Kingsley Ejiofor, also includes provisions and policies on whistle blowing in order to compensate whistle blowers for useful information. The whistle blowing policies also extend to cases where false information is provided and includes punishment for providing the agency with fake information.

The Acting Director-General stated that the agency is constantly seeking support from the public to provide useful information to assist the agency in tackling drug counterfeiters. She added that importers, distributors and marketers should desist from importing items prohibited by NAFDAC as contained in the Import Prohibition list.
