NAFDAC Arraigns Importer of Fake Mosquito Coils


December 13, 2016 — The National Agency for Foods and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), recently arraigned one Yakubu Kabiru at the Federal High Court, Lagos over the alleged importation of fake and unregistered mosquito coils.

According to the Complaint with charge number FHC/L/87c/16, NAFDAC alleges that the accused had on January 14, 2016, imported fake and unregistered mosquito coils, with brand name ‘Green Arrow Plant Mosquito Coil’, into the country, contrary to sections 1(a) and 1(1) of the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processes Foods (Miscellaneous Provision) Act Cap. C34, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, and punishable under Sections 3(1)(a) and 6(1)(a) of the same Act.

The accused who was arraigned before Justice Abdulazeez Anka on a three-count charge bordering on importation of fake, banned and unregistered product, pleaded ‘Not Guilty’ to the charges.

Counsel to the accused person, Mr. Emeka Nathaniel, in an oral application, urged the court to admit bail to his client. However, Justice Anka, turned down the oral application, and ordered the lawyer to file proper bail application and serve same on the prosecution.

The judge consequently remanded the accused in Prison’s custody, pending the hearing of his bail application.

The case is adjourned to January 31, 2017.
