Nigeria News | Kano Declares War Against Codeine, Raids 20 Suspected Locations

In a bid to eradicate Codeine Syrup in Nigeria, the Kano state Pharmacist Inspection Committee, under the Ministry of Health, has started an intensive process of retrieving all codeine containing preparations from pharmaceutical outlets and individuals in the state.

The committee visited about twenty premises in Kano state in order to retrieve such products and some preparations have been retrieved with proper documentation said Abdu Umar Madaki, the Chairman of the committee who is also the Director of Pharmaceutical Services in the Ministry of health.

The committee chairman enjoined all pharmacies and individuals having any codeine containing preparations, as a matter of urgency, to contact the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria,  Kano office to collect the recall form to assist in mopping up codeine circulation in the state.

It will be recalled that some amounts of illegal and expired drugs were confiscated in past months and prosecution of the arrested culprits is still ongoing in certain cases.

Kano state government has assured its citizen that they would partner with the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN), National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and other stakeholders in the state towards tackling the menace of illegal drug sale and abuse. The government is advising the public to cooperate with the government in tackling this menace.
