December 7, 2016 – The 40th Session of the Administrative Council of the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO), is currently underway in Harare, Zimbabwe. The session which takes place annually, typically brings together heads and representatives of the ARIPO’s 19-member state IP offices. The Administrative Council is responsible for recommending policies to the Council of Ministers and reviewing the implementation of those policies by the ARIPO Secretariat.
The Session began on December 5, with opening remarks from Mrs. Virginia Mabhiza, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs of the Republic of Zimbabwe. The Permanent Secretary applauded the council members for having taken the organization this far.
Discussions at the session would include a review of several documents on the administrative aspects of the Organization including the proposed budget and program of activities for 2017. The session will also include a review of proposals to amend some of the ARIPO treaties to continually keep them in line with international trends.
