A Maryland based non-profit organization, Game Plan has filed a lawsuit in the District of Columbia District Court against King James and his company, Uninterrupted for trademark infringement.
The plaintiff alleges that the defendant is using its slogan “More Than an Athlete” without permission or authorization.
According to the plaintiff, Game Plan claims that it owns the slogan and has been trademarked back in 2016.
The plaintiff reportedly said that James and his company did not start using the slogan until 2018 after Fox News host, Laura Ingram, told James to “shut up and dribble.”
Game Plan reportedly argued that James saw members of the organization wear t-shirts with the slogan on them during a 2017 game where the Cleveland Cavaliers played the Washington Wizards in D.C.
Game Plan is seeking $33 million as payment for trademark violation, claiming they’ve been using the slogan “I Am More Than An Athlete” since 2016 and they obtained the trademark in 2018, per TMZ
A representative for Uninterrupted reportedly said that “the complaint filed by Game Plan today is meritless and contains numerous factual inaccuracies. Uninterrupted owns prior rights in and to the More Than an Athlete trademark.”
The case is pending.
