May 3, 2016 — According to the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), over the last five years, the agency has seized pirated works across Nigeria valued at N.8.1bn.
The Director General of the NCC, Mr. Afam Ezekude, made this known while speaking in Lagos at the Annual General Meeting and the Pre-Annual General Lecture of the Intellectual Property Law Association (IPLAN).
According to him, 7,915,605 units of pirated works had been seized, 54 criminal convictions had been secured and 256 anti-piracy raids had been carried by the Agency out over the last five years.
The Director General also stated that the Commission is prosecuting about 172 criminal copyright infringement and civil cases at the Federal High Court. Charges filed have ranged from books, film, music to software piracy.
