Counterfeit Drugs: Another One Bites the Dust!

May 19, 2015 — In earlier publications, here and here, we reported that two individuals who were charged with manufacturing and selling counterfeit drugs were convicted by the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos and Delta State.

Earlier this week, a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos State convicted a man, Sylvanus Nwanoro, for adulterating the drug: COF ‘N’ COLD with Codeine syrup. Prior to his conviction, he was alleged to have been in illegal possession and engaged in the sale of the counterfeit cough syrup on September 29, 2015. He was arrested at Okokomaiko in Lagos by officials from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

Although he was arraigned on a five-count charge, he pleaded guilty to one of the charge prompting the prosecution to review the facts of the case before the court. In his Allocutus he stated that he was a first time offender and realized the gravity of his crime. The court, presided over by Justice Ibrahim Buba, condemned his actions and sentenced him to a five-year prison term with an option of N500,000 fine.
